A belt with almost no miles on it can still fail on the next ride. Here is why.
A CVT belt is a wear item, but it does not wear on a mileage schedule the way a tire does. It fails from conditions, and the same belt can last years of easy riding or fail on a single hard trip.
Belts generate heat from friction against the sheaves, and sustained hard use — deep sand, steep climbs, heavy loads — pushes that heat higher than a belt is designed to handle for long. A belt that has been run hot repeatedly is weaker even if it looks fine.
Running a machine in too high a gear for the load, so the engine labors at low RPM, puts more stress on a belt than running it hard at the correct gear. If a machine is bogging rather than revving, that is usually the wrong gear for the terrain.
A CVT is not sealed against sustained submersion the way some riders assume. Water crossings introduce moisture into the belt housing, and a belt that runs wet for any length of time degrades faster than one that stays dry.
Experienced riders carry a spare belt as standard kit, not as an overreaction. A belt failure is unpredictable enough, and remote enough when it happens, that the alternative is a long wait for a trailer.
A belt that is starting to glaze, crack or fray is visible to someone who knows what to look for, well before it lets go completely. That is the case for having it checked on a schedule rather than only after it fails.
